=511= Reflections: Wisdom

Recently, I noticed that in many areas and people have been seeking me for wisdom. I don’t think I can give great wisdom—even though I joke that I do—however, somehow or another, people still come to me for some stuff.

I recall back when I was a young 15 year old Christian that just found my faith, I asked the Lord for wisdom. I admired Wisdom. I used to read Solomon and really admired how he asked for wisdom and God blessed him with even more. I admired how wise he was in handling the case of the two woman and one baby. The quality that I really wanted was wisdom.

Being that NA boy that is supposed to be stupid and have less of a future, to have grown up to this man that people likes and trusts, Lord, I give thanks for that.

Truly ignorance and a big mouth is a bad combination. Will talk more about it, but yeah, goodness, why would you even teach a photographer that obviously knows more than you how to shoot. -.-

Having wisdom to know something, doesn’t mean that I have the courage and perseverance to follow it through. Just look at Solomon’s life and see how he failed even with all the wisdom he has. Man, I am struggling so hard to follow wisdom. Head over heart has always been on my mind. It gets dangerous when the head starts listening to the heart and starts rationalising; thinking of outcomes that are desirable but not wise.

May I be the man that follows wisdom.

=509= Five Word Post: New Segment

Ok, so basically, I do take too long sometimes to reflect and write down all my thoughts, some of my trip reviews and all never get completed because of the sheer amount of content. So to simplify and make my job simple as a blogger, I will introduce to you my new segment, the five word post. Basically, a post with 5 words! I may or may not elabourate, so yeah, if you understand, good for you, if you don’t, you can ask me! I might just answer you! 🙂

Ok let’s start.

=508= Words of Melancholy: Ache

Seeing a visual representation of something made me rather disheartened that I am like that.

Man, it isn’t cool. Taking care. Just seeing that kinda made me feel for the situation.

Was asked between people, it was just so simple for me. Man.

Distance does translate to walls. These walls are put up, with the word, “reserved.”

Hahaha, oh well, Kelvin. Stop this now. Look to God and be satisfied. Fulfil your promise to Him. Come on.

HAHAHA, I am still laughing at what I drew on the lantern! 😂

Ok! To another day! 🙂

=507= Reflections: Requirements

The more I dive into the whole sound engineering field, the more I discover that it isn’t about opinion, it is about good and bad.

I remember when I first taught Faith and Javier, I taught them what I was taught from my school’s internship, “as long as it sounds good to you, it is ok!”

Perhaps to a certain extent, that is true. However, the more I do sound, the more I discover that new sound Engineers have no opinion or scared of giving their opinion on sound or couldn’t identify the problems of a sound.

People often ask me, how do you tell/test whether a sound engineer is good? Isn’t it very subjective?

Well, yes, artistic taste is very subjective. I may not like metal, another person does like metal, that doesn’t mean that a metal song is bad compared to a rock song. However, before everything there are prerequisites and rules that each song must comply to for it to sound good. For example, all songs require the musicians to play in time, in pitch and have dynamics. Similarly, a sound engineer need to fulfil a few things before adding artistic flair.

First, a sound engineer needs to make sure every instrument can be heard. If in a band I have Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keys, Backup Vocals and Lead Vocals, I must make sure every single instrument and voice can be heard and in the correct levels that makes sense. I cannot have the bass to be deficient in the mix. I cannot have the backup vocals louder than the lead vocals. Of course, the Singers/musicians themselves have to work on their own musicialities and dynamics, however, as the engineer, it is my responsibility to educate people and do whatever I can to help people sound good.

Second, every voice must sound human; every instrument must sound right. I often catch engineers not alert to make someone sound decent or human. I don’t blame them of course, this is probably due to the fact that they aren’t educated like me. Every voice should sound natural, unless, the song require
that kind of sound. Voices shouldn’t be muffled. Guitars shouldn’t be twangy. Oh talking about guitars, I have had a lot of trouble EQ-ing guitars. I just cannot seem to get a full sound that has adequate string noise and body. Recently, after having a ton of trouble trying to fix it, I discovered that if you add a simple plate reverb to the guitar, you will surprised at how well it improves the tone. After the 14 year old classical vocalist recording, I have been adding a plate reverb to the keys, man, it makes piano samples sound so good! 😭

Third, a sound engineer MUST be alert to the sound changing. This is especially important for live shows. A singer may feel like speaking in between chorus and verses, you have to watch out for that and cut reverb whenever the singer speaks.

Fourth, there mustn’t be any unwanted artifacts in your mix. Namely, distortion, feedback, harmonic distortion, leaks from other mics and electrical hum to name a few. Ok, for those reading and like to have some education, here are the artifacts and how to solve them.

Distortion – basic distortion happens when an instrument in the signal chain gets a signal too high that it cannot handle—clipping. Hence, it will create that static-ish kinda sound, very bad for everything.

Solution: Reduce gain of the equipment that is clipping. Normally the pre-amp.

Basic sound system:
Sound source – Mic – pre-amp – console – amp – speakers
Every instrument on this list has a chance of clipping. Reduce the gain of the equipment that is clipping.

Harmonic Distortion – happens when you try to compress something too much. Certain frequencies seem to crackle and the voice will sound unnatural.

Solution: Turn off the compressor or move the threshold such that it doesn’t compress so much. Ratio can be more gentle as well.

Feedback – happens when the mic sends a signal, the speaker outputs that sound, that sound gets back into the microphone, hence forming a loop, certain frequencies that are more prominent would ring out.

Solution: Don’t point your microphone to the speakers. Add in an EQ for the speakers so that you can tune out the prominient frequencies

Mic leaks: basically hearing the other instruments on your mic, the leakage from other instruments.

Solutions: Educate the vocalist to project more to increase signal to noise ratio. Add a gate/expander to the channel to soften the softer signal, for better control.

Electrical hum: Buzzing of channel or speakers. This is due to dirty ground or ground loop. This is due to sharing of ground with the other equipment apart from audio, for example, lighting.

Solution: change the power source of the DI or speaker to a source that isn’t used. Lifting the ground would often help too. If both are not possible, gating/expanding the channel would help to cut the buzz when the channel isn’t in use.

Artistic preference comes after fulfilling all of that first. Once you get a mix, having certain things stand out is totally up to you. HOWEVER, it is very important that this doesn’t affect the requirements above. You can make a guitar stand out, no problem, however, it shouldn’t drown out the drums or be too loud.

Truly sound has a template and has its requirements. It is like how there are different types of writing. Formal. Informal. Argumentative. Narrative. Each essay has its own purpose, style and format. However, the rules of grammar still applies to all types of writing. If the rules aren’t followed, it isn’t an essay with proper English. So how can that be a good essay?

Same for sound, if you cannot follow these requirements, the mix can never be a good mix.

Man, how I wish I can do this for a living. 😦

=506= Word: Walk

When you start your walk pretty heavy hearted, but you end it, still heavy hearted, but better.

I wonder sometimes, would I have been happier if I didn’t poke my finger into things. I obviously don’t regret it, but you know, just wondering. With my demeneor, I doubt that people would have noticed if I didn’t poke.

However through these few months, I have grown quite a bit. I have learned how to be more vulnerable and how to support people more.

Perhaps, just perhaps one day, I will be able to learn how to balance and guard.

Quite thankful for conversations tonight, you now who you are. Walking around NEX, just chatting, man, such a joy.

I am thinking up of a story about this poor dog owner having to give up his dog’s puppy to someone else because he cannot support the puppy.

Oh well.

Thank you Lord.

=505= Words of Melancholy: Leave

I don’t want you to leave my life.

It has come to a point where I rather leave first, than to wait for time to slowly cut us off.

It is just too painful.

Lord, why must people close to me be taken away?

My heart cannot take this Lord.

Father, will you please, please, please give me wisdom, courage and strength.

Wisdom to know what is right, courage to do what is right and strength to continue doing what is right.

Perhaps I am just making too big a deal on this. It really is silly. I guess time will eventually solve this.

My friend, please be well.

=504= Reflections: Related

Well, I have been feeling like a bum at home these few weeks, but like, after yesterday, I am assured that it wasn’t all a waste.

I took a lot of time out to learn from a mainly two people. Then yesterday, I found myself slowly understanding what to do and found myself being clearer on the whole sound engineering thing.

I felt so accomplished yesterday when I was recording and my lecturer was happy with the recording. I honestly learned so much about mic-ing, mixing and recording. Man, now I want to do studio only! 😂

I guess asking two of the sound engineering masters to teach me was really such a good decision. Let me continue to learn how to get a good sound out.

A recurring theme that I have been learning was that nothing learned is wasted. Both of them told me about how their different course of study helped them to do what they are doing now. I have been feeling quite uneasy ever since I applied for Comm studies and my English kept getting corrected. Man. Honestly, when I asked and the dude said, “yeah a lot of writing and GP.” My heart sank a little. However, knowing that I am able to mix and match my course of study, that made me more at ease with Comm studies.

What you study will not restrict what you will do as a job in the future. If you want to change carreer paths, it is possible to do so too.

Having my talk today with Tat Wai was such a fantastic and wonderful thing. Man, no wonder I love him so much. HAHAH, I kinda forgotten how he was and like how wise and informed he is. He gives really such great advice. Really broadened my perspective. Advice on how to put God first. Advice on what I should try. The word of Wisdom that Tat Wai gives, MANNN.

“You think like an engineer!” Man, best compliment you could have given me man. HAHAH! I really do think that over the course of last two Sems, I became very engineer. I have been thinking and learning a lot of things, trying to make sense of a lot of stuff in what they do. I am just Wah. HAHA.

Today my dinner with Tat Wai was such a different one. I remembered that I was always in a position that I am smaller than him, learning everything from him. Today, it seemed that I can talk to him more like a peer. It seemed like we both are Engineers trying to understand each other’s field of study. It was really amazing for me.

Thank you God SOO much for this spiritual giant. Man. Thank you Lord.

=503= Word: I Missed You

My innocence is mine on the cross, and you cannot have it. You will not now nor will you ever have power over me.

The truth is I miss you.

I wish I could have shown you His love, His passion, His truth. It has set me free.

I missed you. I’m sorry.

To Cho: I hope in your next life you do not have to resort to violence to be heard.

Man, though morbid, it really is poetic. Starting to read again. WHOO!

=502= Relfections: Express Irritation

I think as someone that kinda wants everyone to like him, I find it hard to express my annoyance or irritation at someone.

However, recently, I reflected more and more, I think that in a friendship, if you are unable to express irritation towards each other, I think that you guys aren’t that close at all.

Of course I am not suggesting going around complaining about everyone to their faces. I am just saying that in any close relationship with someone, there will be a time where you will be irritated with that person. Do you share that irritation with the person? Or would you just stay still and just let that irritation bite your head until it is empty?

Why are people scared of sharing their irritations of their friends? Perhaps, they are scared that expressing it would jeopardise their friendship. Perhaps, they don’t want to go through the whole drama of talking things through? Well, the more I do it, the more I find that the advantages heavily outweigh the disadvantages. It is definitely worth  the risk.

I mean, if your friendship would crumble just because you say ONE thing, I don’t think your friendship is THAT strong. Perhaps you aren’t that close to the person. If you are close, expressing your thoughts would help the other party to know you better and you are opening up more than you know. You guys would actually become closer!

If the person do get angry and ends the frienship because of your rational irritation, I doubt that friend is worth keeping.

People should really treasure their relationships a bit more.

Truly, strong friendships are built on communication.

A strong friendship can grow both parties!

Dear God, please continue to bless me with friends that will make me grow! Thank you Lord!
